The two actions fundamental to the Christian life
The two basic, fundamental, necessary actions to the Christian life are prayer and Bible study. You can’t grow in the ‘grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ’ unless you engage in these behaviors daily. Knowing God is a life long daily process and these two actions are what fuel and provide the power of your growth.
Regarding Bible study you can initially commit to reading two chapters in the morning and two in the evening. Begin with Genesis. Read the chapters even if you do not understand what is being said. The more you grow in your understanding of the Word the more you will read but what you must do is read the Bible. I John 2:27 says basically that the Holy Spirit has been given to you to teach you what the Word says. So when you read ask the Lord to reveal to you what He wants you to know.
Regarding prayer initially set aside 30 minutes and as quickly as possible move to an hour. Make this time a date on your calendar. Don’t break the date. Treat the time as valuable and never negotiate the time.
When you pray take 5 – 10 minutes to worship the Lord. Turn on some worship music and sing along. Then begin to mediate on the Word that you read and let the Spirit teach you. Then pray for those in authority, your enemies, give thanks for everything in your life and then ask for what you need. Needs are primarily Spiritual so pray for understanding of the Word.
That’s a good start. If you do that then you can take the next step. But you first must make this initial step a habit.
